The Life of Jesus
Jesus speaks on faith
2008/11/7 SJCA Small group material
Scripture: Luke 18:1-8, 17:5-6
I.     Background:
1)      Chapter 18 speaks of a widow; she had an adversary who tormented her. In the city where she lives, there is a judge who can pay vengeance for her. Widows are those who have no one to depend on in this world.  A judge speaks of someone who has power to solve her problems. This particular widow was in a very bad situation, an adversary was tormenting her, and this judge was one with no integrity, respected no one and had no fear toward God. This should have been a very hopeless situation.
2)      The disciples came to ask Jesus to increase their faith.
II.  Questions to consider
1.        Prayer in faith
                i.                In this parable, what are the similarities does the widow have with our present daily lives as Christians?
ii.                What similarities or differences does this unjust judge have with God?
iii.                What cased this widow to plead non-stop and not lose heart? What does this have to do with “faith”?
iv.                What promise does God give us in this parable?
2.        What is faith
                i.    When the disciples ask Jesus to increase their faith, what was the most difficult thing did they consider in the lesson of faith?
ii.    Why did the Lord use mustard seed to describe faith? How did this bring about a different understanding of faith for the disciples?
iii.      What was real faith that was spoken of in this passage?
III.     Feedback
Faith will always be the principle of spiritual life and living . Begin with faith, by faith, achieve the effect of faith. Especially in this period of uneasy time, faith is critically important. When do you need faith in your everyday life? What help does this passage give you?
IV.   Theme verse

He replied, "If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it will obey you. (Luke 17:6)
